CISOs grapple with a growing concern: Stress-related substance abuse

Change, he says, starts from within by identifying these stressors, then setting healthy boundaries and regularly taking a self-inventory. “Without making them feel guilty, we let CISOs know that we understand their struggle and that drinking away their stress is not effective, but rather a false solution, a betrayer of their ultimate state. We show them alternatives, how to be happier and more joyful in their work and lives. And our motto is that we won’t let them fail.”

Non-drinking networking events can be more productive

Sober 24 years now and having seen how alcohol plays such a big part in CISO gatherings and large events, marketing consultant Jennifer VanAntwerp started Sober in Cyber a year ago. She now organizes non-drinking networking events for CISOs and security professionals at the RSA Conference, Black Hat, and other large events as well as at small gatherings. She has observed that discussion and information sharing is more productive and beneficial for attendees when alcohol is not present — and there’s no hangover.

“I share that the best way of dealing with stress is to take inventory of your own health, lifestyle, and work-life balance. And if people are struggling with alcohol, I tell them that they don’t have to wait for dry January to stop, that they can set smaller goals. If you drink every day, give yourself two or three weeks without drinking to see how you feel. Within one week, people are already feeling better because alcohol is a depressant and often disrupts your sleep,” she says.
